The AFL-CIO posted a net gain of more than 141,000 members in 2009. According to the labor federation’s membership report released early this month, new affiliations and growth of existing affiliates contributed nearly 402,000 new members in 2009, offsetting the loss of more than 260,800 members.

The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) has reached an agreement with the New York Attorney General intended to curb alleged abuse in the railroad’s occupational disability pension system. Under the March 22nd agreement with Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, LIRR will appoint an independent examiner to review the pension system and to design compliance rules and controls.
