Ten New Year’s Resolutions for the Workplace – A HR Perspective
January 03, 2013

Each year, millions of people make resolutions for the New Year. F&H Solutions Group has compiled a list of 10 important resolutions to help your employees say hello to a happier workplace and goodbye to bad habits!

10. No more gossiping. – Leave the gossiping at home. Whether you are talking about a co-worker or discussing so-called “office drama,” you never know where that information is going to end up. The office should be a place of respect and professionalism. Next time a colleague wants you to engage in a gossip session, re-direct the conversation to another topic or respectfully tell the colleague that you do not want to engage in these types of conversations.

9. Refrain from the excessive complaining. – No one likes to be around someone who is constantly complaining about insignificant problems.

8. Take a break. – Many people sit at their desk all day and don’t move around enough. Go for a short walk and get some fresh air. Your brain could use some rest and your eyes will appreciate the break from staring at the computer. You will be more productive when you return to your desk.

7. Don’t become complacent. – When is the last time you really challenged yourself? It’s never too late. Whether the challenge results in a success or failure, the opportunity will provide you with a great learning experience and something to build off of.

6. Don’t be too hard on yourself. – So, you made a mistake. You’re human. Take responsibility and move on.

5. Socialize. – In today’s competitive job market, it really helps to know people. So this year, get more involved. Go out and meet some new people! No one will ever say that professional networking is a bad idea.

4. Control your Internet addiction. – It’s very easy to be distracted by the Internet with social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and the temptation of online shopping. Many companies monitor their employees’ usage. You never know when it could come back to haunt you! Stay focused on your job.

3. Exercise. – Come on. Our resolution list wouldn’t be complete without it! Exercising will increase your overall mood and productivity. Instead of taking an hour for your lunch everyday, go for a long walk or locate a nearby gym, if possible.

2. Manage stress. – Stress can take over your life and affect you in ways you don’t realize. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Make sure you take care of your mental health as you would your physical health.

1. Be positive. Life is hard and not everything always works out the way you want it to. Instead of thinking about all the things that are going wrong in your life, focus on the positives. Although things could be going better in your personal life, your workplace can be a place of reward and accomplishment, if you allow it.

All the best for a healthy and happy 2013 from F&H Solutions Group.
