Following a Just Cause Checklist helps ensure fairness, consistency, and legal compliance in every disciplinary decision. Doing so will help keep those haunting HR nightmares at bay!

Before taking disciplinary action, ask yourself:

  • Was the employee aware of the rule or expectation that they are being disciplined for?
  • Is the rule reasonable and clearly communicated to the employee?
  • Was a fair investigation conducted?
  • Is there solid evidence of misconduct?
  • Have the rules resulting in the discipline for the employee been applied consistently?
  • Is the discipline proportional to the offense?
  • Have past performance and discipline been considered?
