If you’re conducting a workplace investigation, chances are you might be dealing with a complex situation and/or a sensitive subject. Here’s how to deal with a difficult employee during a workplace investigation:

  1. Remind the employee of the meeting’s purpose—this is a chance for the employee to explain their side
  2. Remind the employee that refusal to cooperate may be the basis for discipline
  3. Remind the employee that without the employee’s cooperation, the company will have no choice but to act on basis of information it has collected
  4. Remind the employee that dishonesty may also be the basis for discipline
  5. The goal is to have a professional, cordial, and meaningful investigation where the employee can give their side of the story
