Tip Tuesday: Conducting an Effective Counseling Session

​Properly counseling employees is a critical part of management’s job. Below are essential elements for a productive counseling session:

  1. Counseling sessions should always occur privately
  2. When meeting with the employee, make sure you state the problem objectively
  3. Take the time to listen to the employee’s statements and concerns
  4. Be clear to lay out the policies, rules and expectations
  5. Be certain to summarize how you are leaving the discussion
  6. All conversations should be documented with follow-up's, as needed
